Next Stop....Flagstaff, AZ
Hello Family and Friends,
I had a lovely visit with my stepmom Janice and cousins Julie and Shari. They really know how to have fun. The peanut butter burboun they brought, a small glass, or two, really topped off the evening meal! When I left Janice's in Visalia, she gave me a lunch she had made for me. Isn't she awesome? How long has it been since your mom made you a lunch? I'm so lucky. AND...she made a turkey dinner the night before! I love being spoiled like that.
So, I got to Barstow and first stop was where I thought I would stay...the Slash-X Ranch and Cafe', about 10 miles out of Barstow proper. (One of my camping apps recommended it). Well, as you can see, it looks like an abandoned place right out of a horror film. No one there, ghost town-esque. Note there is a truck in one of pics...that guy never made it out of there! I drove over to town and it was so sketchy, I had to push on to Needles, CA where this a nice KOA. Worked on the van stuff today, did some writing, took a swim in their nice pool and then took a shower. Met a family from Massachusetts and I also met another neighbor Eric. The biker community has its own groups and one is "Bunk a Biker" which allows folks to open up their homes so someone traveling on a motorcycle can have a nice place to stay. He told me about "Slab City" - check it out. It may be my next home, Ha Ha. https://californiacrossings.com/slab-city-california-counter-culture/
Eric has me beat on the minimalist game. He has everything on the bike and I felt like I had too much stuff after seeing him all packed...tent, jetboil, clothes, tools, everything.
Tomorrow I head to Flagstaff to my friend Janean. I'll check out the town and then go see her on Saturday.
Take care,
Laurie and Calamity Jane
